Contamination
Contamination
of our water supplies can occur in a variety of ways or causes.
Jabiru Uranium Mine is an example of contamination through
cross-connection. This occurred around March 2004 where contaminated
water apparently was inadvertently linked with the potable
or drinking water supply.
Deliberate poisoning of water supplies is also a concern in
these times of terrorist attacks. Water authorities are mindful
that there could be attempts to deliberately contaminate communities'
drinking water.
Inadvertent
poisoning of water supplies can also occur in rural areas
through aerial spraying of pesticides which settle on roof
areas and can run off into drinking water tanks. These pesticides
and also fertilizers can also leach into ground water supplies
(i.e. wells or bore water) when applied directly to the ground
surface.
