Drugs
in our water
Are there drugs in your water supply?
It has recently become apparent that “Pharmaceutical
and Personal Care Products” (PPCP) form a relatively
new class of chemicals entering our waterways and potentially
our drinking water. Although research is limited to date,
researchers have found an effect of these chemicals on fish.
Our growing awareness of the potential impacts of PPCP suggests
that an enhanced research effort and new methods of control
are required.
Some of the best ways to reduce the impact of
these chemicals on our environment and ourselves are:
• limit our use of these chemicals
• check if your pharmacy has a return and disposal scheme
• lobby your government for safe disposal of PPCPs
The
majority of PPCPs can be removed from water with a carbon
block filter.
